Finding Calm in the Midst of Chaos: Education, Stress Management, and Support for Parents

Groups for Parents and TEens ADD ADHD Seattle

Education:

  • Learn strategies, systems, and solutions to help your kids with organization, time management, bedtime and sleep, planning, getting homework completed and turned in, self-advocacy, and more.

  • Understand the neurology of ADD/ADHD – what exactly is happening in the brain to cause problems with attention, distractions, impulsivity, hyperactivity, or other traits?

  • Know the real life impact of ADD/ADHD. What does executive functioning and self-regulation mean and how can problems in that area affect your child day to day? What are co-existing conditions to watch out for? What are some common gifts and strengths?

  • Become familiar with resources in your community and at your child’s school. What help can you ask for at school and what is the difference between a 504 and an IEP? What are current treatments for ADD/ADHD – traditional, complementary, and alternative? What is the value of a learning assessment? Learn the differences between therapy, tutoring, and coaching.

Stress Management – Learn ways to relax and gain more control over your thinking, emotions, and behaviors:

  • Practice some easy “on-the-go” techniques to reduce stress in your body and your mind.

  • Develop awareness of unhelpful thinking patterns about your child and yourself as a parent that increase stress. Learn ways to manage or restructure them.

  • Learn a simple technique to help you become aware of what you need in order to take care of yourself and be more effective.

  • Practice methods for bringing more joy, contentment, and positive emotions into your life. Your own happiness and well-being will impact your whole family.

Support – Talk with other parents who understand:

Express your concerns and share strategies with others who have kids with similar challenges. If your child is struggling, it’s a tremendous relief to meet parents who won’t judge you or your child and can relate to what you’re going through.
